The Ghost Box
by Cindy Russell
Let’s talk about the Ghost Box for a while. The Ghost Box is one of my favorite tools in the field of paranormal research. It can provide immediate results, and can be quite handy during an investigation.
Simply put, the Ghost Box is nothing more than a simple AM/FM radio. It has been modified, however, to constantly scan all of the radio wave frequencies on a continuous basis, going from one end of the spectrum to the other and back again. The result is a confusing cacophony of noise that makes no sense whatsoever. But here’s where it gets interesting: There is a theory suggesting that a ghost, spirit or entity can grab sound bites from this mess and use the box to communicate with those who are listening. (Think Bumblebee in Transformers.)
Skeptics and naysayers discount the Ghost Box out of hand, claiming trickery or audio matrixing (a phenomena where the brain attempts to hear recognizable sounds in an unrecognizable clash of noise). But it’s hard to argue with some of the results our team has obtained during various investigations. On one occasion, for instance, when asked to say each of the team member’s names one by one, our Ghost Box did so. (Until we got to me, and it called me a bad name. Still not sure what brought that on.)
Further indications that we aren’t matrixing came during our investigation in the Mexican restaurant in OKC. Our client was looking for proof that her late father was still present in the building, but during our Ghost Box session, a woman’s name came through several times. We later found out that it was the name of the client’s mother.
It is important to record Ghost Box sessions in order to verify your catches later. Sometimes you may think that you hear a catch, but upon later review you realize that you were mistaken. On the other hand, you can also find responses that you missed during the session itself. It’s much easier to verify what you have at a later date, with your analysis software and the ability to rewind.
Another reason you should always review your Ghost Box sessions is that you might miss something else even more impressive. During our investigation in Oologah Oklahoma, I caught what was probably the best EVP I’ve ever recorded. It was loud enough that it actually drowned out the Ghost Box itself. (You can hear this EVP in our Investigations page: ‘Residential Investigation in Oologah, OK’—“This is Mary.”)
While being more expensive than a standard radio, there are several models available for less than one hundred dollars. These can be easily found online. Just Google ‘Ghost Box’ and you’ll get plenty of hits.
Should you ever get any good catches with your Ghost Box, we’d love to hear them. Just send them to timdoyon@finderscreepers.org. If they are exceptionally good, Tim may even post them on our website—with your permission, of course.
