The Ouija Board - A Paranormal Researcher's Opinion

The human body has its own electromagnetic field.  It looks something like this:

The electromagnetic fields of the human body -- some people refer to them as the aura.

This brings up an interesting question:  When a body dies, what happens to its energy? The First Law of Thermodynamics tells us that energy can neither be created nor destroyed.  It simply changes form.  So the energy that makes up the human ‘soul’ (for lack of a better term) does not die along with the body.  It continues to exist.

It is theorized that a ghost or spirit continues to have its own electromagnetic field, and that under the right circumstances; these EMFs can be measured and documented. That’s where the EMF detector comes in.

During an investigation, the researchers first take their EMF detectors into the building (or wherever the investigation is taking place) and take what is referred to as baseline readings. This is nothing more than measuring the ambient electromagnetic activity in the immediate surroundings.  Then, during the investigation, EMF levels are monitored for any unexplained spikes.  When a spike is measures, it represents the possibility of an entity.  It’s just that simple.

But there’s more than one way to utilize an EMF detector during a ghost hunt. Sometimes the simple act of taking baselines can help debunk a haunting.  Ambient EMFs are normally low and of no particular concern.  But if a person sensitive to EMF is exposed to very high EMF levels on a continuing basis, this can have severe detrimental physical effects.  High EMF can cause fatigue, headaches, nausea and in some cases, paranoia and hallucinations.  If a paranormal researcher finds dangerously high levels of EMF during an investigation, chances are some if not all of the activity can be explained right there.  Of course, it is also important to verify this one way or another by continuing the investigation, and not simply close up shop right then and there.

A small assortment of EMF Meters and Detectors used by ghost hunters during paranormal research and investigations.

EMF detectors can be purchased for as little as $25.00, up to the hundreds, depending on how much you want to spend.  You can find them on both eBay and Amazon, for example.  For any ghost hunter or paranormal investigator, an EMF detector is a must, and should be at the top of your equipment wish list.
